An exterior renovation goes best when it is sequenced from the top down. The roof edge comes first, because the drip edge ties into the fascia; then fascia, soffit and eavestrough; then siding and trim; then doors and porch details. Doing siding before a planned re-roof, or hanging new eavestrough on fascia that is about to be replaced, means paying twice for the same edge.
Housing stock shapes the job. Many 1960s to 1980s backsplits and side-splits in Scarborough, Etobicoke, North York and Mississauga still wear their original aluminum siding, and their soffits were often never vented properly. Older Toronto semis tend to mix brick with wood-clad upper storeys, bay windows and porches where rot hides at sill and column bases. Stucco on newer GTA homes needs a different approach: cracks at window corners usually signal moisture behind the finish, so we open it up and repair the cause rather than just patching the surface.
Entry doors are about the opening as much as the door. We check the rough opening and sill for rot, install a sloped sill pan so water drains out instead of into the subfloor, then insulate and trim the frame. One permit point to know: siding is usually maintenance, but homes inside a Heritage Conservation District can need City heritage approval for exterior changes, so we confirm that before materials are ordered.

Fiber-cement (James Hardie) is gold standard — fire-resistant, won't warp, 30+ year life. Vinyl is less expensive and very durable. Wood is beautiful but needs maintenance every 4–6 years.
