Extending it past each side of the frame lets the panels stack against the wall instead of covering the glass. We mark both before drilling, then level the brackets across the full width, which matters on long living-room walls where a small error at one end becomes obvious at the other.

An inside mount needs enough depth in the window opening for the headrail and clearance from crank handles, which is often limited on casement windows.
