Custom carpentry in an older Toronto house is mostly about fit. Walls in a 1910s semi in Riverdale or a 1920s detached home in Leaside are rarely plumb, floors slope toward the centre bearing wall, and plaster corners are rounded. A built-in bookcase or window seat that looks like it grew there has been scribed to every one of those surfaces, so there is no gap to hide with caulk. Newer homes in Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham are squarer, but builder drywall corners and thin baseboards bring their own fitting problems.
Fireplace surrounds and mantels need extra care. Wood trim and mantels must keep the clearances to the firebox opening set by the building code or, for gas inserts, by the manufacturer's installation manual. We confirm those numbers before drawing the design, because a mantel set too low eventually has to come off.
Trim work follows the same logic. Matching a tall built-up baseboard or a deep crown in a 1920s house usually means milling the profile rather than buying the closest stock moulding, and the difference is obvious once old and new run side by side in the same room. Wainscoting and panelling go up after any electrical boxes have been moved by the electrician, because a receptacle landing in the middle of a panel is hard to fix later.
