Etobicoke stretches from the lake to Steeles, and its housing changes block by block. The Kingsway was laid out in the 1920s and 1930s with brick and stucco Tudor-revival and centre-hall homes, leaded windows and solid oak trim. Along the lakeshore, Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch are a mix of early 1900s cottages, wartime storey-and-a-halfs and new semis. Alderwood is mostly post-war bungalows, Islington and Markland Wood are full of 1960s back-splits, and Humber Bay Shores is a dense cluster of condo towers.
Those homes generate very different handyman lists. In The Kingsway it is usually finish carpentry: sticking original panel doors, loose baseboard and casing, worn stair treads and plaster cracks around arched openings. Our doors and carpentry work is built for that older millwork, matching profiles instead of replacing them. In Mimico and Long Branch, the wind and damp coming off Lake Ontario are hard on exterior wood, so we see rotted window sills, tired storm doors, failed caulking and gate hardware. The back-splits around Islington call for basement-stair railings, bathroom fan replacements and drywall repairs where 1960s fixtures come out.
