Most interlocking failures come from skipped base preparation. We excavate to depth, lay HPB or 3/4" clear, compact in lifts, and only then start setting stone.

The stone you pick is what you see, but the base underneath is what you are really paying for. Most of Toronto and the GTA sits on heavy clay that holds water and heaves in winter. Interlock laid on a thin layer of gravel over that clay will rut under car tires and sink at the edges within a few seasons. The fix is depth and compaction: excavating well below the finished grade, laying geotextile fabric over the clay so the base doesn't migrate into it, then placing and compacting granular base in thin lifts rather than dumping it all at once.
Permeable interlock is a different system: open-graded clear stone instead of fine granular, with wider joints so rainwater soaks through. It suits properties where runoff is a problem, but it is not something you can convert to later, so the decision is made at the design stage.
What drives cost is rarely the stone alone. Breaking out old concrete, the amount of excavation and disposal, steps and level changes, retaining walls, curved borders and tight access all add labour. On older semis in the east end and the Junction, mutual driveways and narrow side yards mean smaller equipment and more hand work. City rules also limit how much of a front yard can be paved and how wide a driveway can be, so widening plans need checking before you choose a pattern.
The mistakes we see most: patio-depth bases under driveways, no edge restraint so borders creep outward, sand washed out of the joints, and patios graded back toward the house. Planning outdoor space as a whole? An interlock patio pairs well with a custom pergola or a raised deck stepping down to it.
